Five Rivers State University (RSU) students abducted by suspected cultists have been rescued in a coordinated operation by the Rivers State Police Command.
The victims were freed in the early hours of Thursday after police tactical units, other security agencies, and members of the community worked together to locate and secure their release.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the rescue in a statement, adding that the students were immediately taken to a medical facility for check-up and treatment.
The abduction occurred on Tuesday when gunmen reportedly stormed the students’ off-campus residence at Rumuchi/Rumuohia in Emuoha Local Government Area, whisking away five undergraduates to an undisclosed location.
Several other students managed to escape during the attack but reportedly sustained injuries in the process.
University sources revealed that both the Nkpolu-Oroworukwu and Emuoha campuses have experienced rising security concerns in recent weeks, heightening anxiety among students and staff.
SP Iringe-Koko identified the rescued students as Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious, and London Sampson.
She explained that the rescue took place in Rumudogo 2 Community, Emuoha LGA, after actionable intelligence and cooperation from local residents.
Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the suspects who remain at large, according to the police spokesperson.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, assured the public that the command would not relent until the perpetrators are brought to justice and called for continued cooperation from residents and other security agencies.
He further urged students and the general public to continue their daily activities without fear, emphasizing that the safety and security of residents remain the top priority of the Rivers State Police Command.
