A soldier has allegedly stabbed to death a young man identified simply as Ugo in the presence of his younger brother and cousin after reportedly assaulting and molesting him near Plantation City Estate, close to Otokutu community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident, which occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, left residents of the area in shock as the victim, said to be in his early thirties, was confirmed dead in a hospital where he was rushed for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the soldier, dressed in full military uniform, inflicted multiple stab wounds on the deceased, including a deep cut to his rib and another on his hand. Ugo’s wife is said to be heavily pregnant.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying: “We received the complaint, that’s all I can say for now.”
Narrating how the tragedy occurred, the deceased’s younger brother, identified as Toshi, said they were driving into an estate after Plantation City when security personnel stopped them at the gate for routine checks.
According to him, “My brother was trying to call his friend in the estate to confirm his visit when a soldier approached, accusing him of trying to force his way inside. Despite explaining that he was only making a call, the soldier slapped him twice. When we tried to intervene, he dragged my brother out of the car and kept assaulting him.”
Toshi said efforts by the person they were visiting and other eyewitnesses to calm the situation failed, as the soldier continued the assault before allegedly stabbing his brother.
“The soldier stabbed him in the hand and the rib. It was a very deep cut. We rushed him to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead,” he recounted.
Human rights activist, Comrade Israel Joe, has condemned the killing, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable.” He called on the Delta State Police Command, led by CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, and the Chief of Army Staff to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure justice for the deceased.
Meanwhile, Toshi has appealed to relevant authorities to ensure the soldier and others involved are brought to justice, insisting that his brother’s death must not be swept under the carpet.
