Sowore Challenges Soludo on Prosperity Pastors vs. Akwa Okuko Arrest

Human Rights activist and former presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore has publicly challenged the Anambra State Government, led by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, regarding the arrest of spiritualist Chidozie Nwangwu, widely known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki.

Sowore took to his social media handle to address what he views as a glaring double standard in the enforcement of laws against fraudulent or harmful public beliefs.

Sowore notes that the most prominent allegation leveled against Akwa Okuko by the Anambra State Government is that he promises people wealth through supernatural rituals, including a product he promotes as “Oke Ite”. According to the government, such practices amount to encouraging fraudulent or harmful beliefs among the public.

Sowore argues that this accusation raises a “critical and unavoidable question” regarding why prosperity-preaching pastors are not held to the same standard.

He points out that every week across Anambra State and Nigeria, “dozens of pastors publicly promise ‘miracle money,’ ‘divine financial breakthroughs,’ ‘instant wealth,’ and ‘supernatural business uplift’”.

Sowore adds that many of these pastors collect offerings, or sell products like oils, seeds, water, or prayer sessions that are allegedly said to guarantee prosperity. He highlights that Governor Soludo himself has been seen attending these events, yet none of these pastors are arrested or charged for making the very same supernatural claims attributed to Akwa Okuko.
