Sowore Questions Government for Releasing Convicts While Detaining Nnamdi Kanu

Abuja — Former Presidential candidate and prominent activist Omoyele Sowore is leading an ongoing mobilization campaign in Abuja, intensifying the call for the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore and his team have taken to the streets to rally public support, highlighting what they term the government’s contradictory stance on justice, especially in light of recent presidential pardons granted to other convicted individuals.

The activists are using the rallies to sensitize the public on Kanu’s protracted detention, despite repeated judicial pronouncements and bail grants in his favour. They argue that the continued custody of the “freedom fighter” is indefensible, particularly when the current administration has recently granted clemency to prisoners, some of whom were serving life sentences.

The rally serves as a precursor to a planned nationwide protest scheduled for October 21, where Sowore and his coalition aim to exert massive public pressure on the government to comply with the court orders and set Kanu free.

During the Abuja mobilization, Sowore challenged the government’s reasoning, stating that there are “no tangible or substantial reasons” for keeping Kanu incarcerated, while others, sentenced for far more severe crimes, have been granted pardon. The activists insist that the selective application of justice undermines the judiciary and the principle of rule of law.

The planned nationwide protest on October 21 is set to amplify the demands for due process and challenge the executive arm’s continuous disregard for judicial directives concerning Kanu’s fate.
