JALINGO—The political dynamics of Taraba State have undergone a radical transformation with the complete decimation of the opposition in the State House of Assembly. The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Kizito Bonzena, alongside fifteen other lawmakers including the Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader have officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker cited the rampant factionalization of the PDP at the national level as the main catalyst for the mass defection.
This political earthquake has resulted in a legislative chamber without a minority party, as Speaker Bonzena confirmed that the move gives the APC complete control: “We now have all 24 members of the House as APC members.”
The Speaker stressed that the decision to join the ruling party at the centre was not motivated by personal ambition but by the “collective interest of the state.” He urged the people of Taraba not to misinterpret the decision, assuring them that aligning with the APC was seen as the best path forward for the state’s development.
The defectors include high-ranking members such as Deputy Speaker Hamman Adama Abdullai (Bali 2 Constituency), Majority Leader Jethro Yakubu (Wukari 1 Constituency), and others like Tafarki Eneme (Kurmi Constituency), Akila Nuhu (Lau Constituency), and Musa Chul (Gassol 1 Constituency).
Peter Diah, a former Speaker and current APC member, expressed his delight at the development, stating he was happy the entire House had now keyed into the vision of President Bola Tinubu. He prayed that the monumental shift signals a new dawn for the people of Taraba State.
