Gunmen on Wednesday afternoon attacked farmers who were harvesting crops in Mbor community, Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing three and injuring two others.
President of the Mushere Youth Movement, Kopmut Monday, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Thursday, saying the attack occurred while villagers were on their farms harvesting produce.
He said the attackers, suspected to be herders, invaded the community around midday and opened fire on the farmers, forcing others to flee for safety.
According to him, “Herders resident in Rongjing yesterday afternoon attacked our members in the Mbor community while they were harvesting their crops, leading to the death of three persons and gunshot injuries to two others who are now in critical condition.”
Monday said the latest incident had thrown the community into panic, adding that the area had witnessed a similar attack on May 26, during which seven people were killed and two churches burnt.
He said, “They had only just returned following the tragic incident in May, which resulted in the killing of seven people, injuries to several others, and the burning of houses and churches. The latest attack has forced residents to flee again.”
The youth leader appealed to security agencies to deploy more personnel to the affected area to forestall further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
Contacted on the allegation, the Chairman of the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN) in Bokkos, Saleh Adamu, denied any involvement of his members in the attack, saying, “We don’t know what happened in the area. I don’t have any information about the incident.”
The spokesperson of Operation Enduring Peace, a special security task force maintaining peace in Plateau State, did not respond to inquiries as of press time.
