DELTA; Delta State witnessed a major political shift on Sunday as top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) arrived in Asaba ahead of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s widely anticipated defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Leading the high-powered delegation was the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who was accompanied by a formidable team of governors and party stalwarts. They were received at the Government House, where Governor Oborevwori personally hosted them in what sources described as a “final strategic meeting” before his formal move into the ruling party.
Prominent figures in the delegation included the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State, and former APC National Chairman and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole.
Speaking shortly after the closed-door meeting, Senator Uzodinma praised Governor Oborevwori for what he called “a bold and visionary step,” adding that his leadership credentials were too strong to be ignored.
“Governor Oborevwori has shown uncommon commitment to development and the wellbeing of his people. APC is a natural home for any leader who puts the nation first,” Uzodinma said.
In his remarks, Ganduje commended Oborevwori’s achievements, noting that the APC was ready to work with him to deepen development across Delta State.
“We are excited to welcome a performing governor who shares our progressive vision. Together, we will build a stronger Delta and a stronger Nigeria,” Ganduje declared.
Governor Oborevwori is expected to make his formal declaration to join the APC on Monday, an event that is drawing national attention and is seen as a critical boost to the party’s strength in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor’s defection is already being viewed as a game-changer, signaling the beginning of an intense political realignment in Delta State, a stronghold of the PDP since the dawn of the Fourth republic.
