President Bola Tinubu has expressed excitement over the Super Falcons’ dramatic win against Morocco, securing Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. He promised the team a heroic welcome on their return to the country.
On Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, the Falcons stunned the home crowd with a 3-2 comeback victory, after trailing 2-0 at halftime. Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy had scored in the first half to put the hosts ahead.
In a thrilling response, Esther Okoronkwo reduced the deficit, Folashade Ijamilusi equalised, and Jennifer Echegini netted the winner, completing a remarkable turnaround.
Speaking via video call to the team after the match, President Tinubu said, “As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy. You will be celebrated.”
He also praised the coaching crew, management team, and sports officials. According to him, “To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole.”
The President wished the players a safe journey back and looked forward to receiving them. When team captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked him for approving their bonuses and said the trophy would be presented in Abuja, Tinubu responded, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
In a statement earlier issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said, “The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.”
Nigeria’s latest triumph adds to earlier WAFCON victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
