Tinubu Honours Pa Alfred Rewane for Role in Democracy Struggle…

President Bola Tinubu has posthumously conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Pa Alfred Rewane, recognising his unwavering commitment to the fight for democracy in Nigeria.

A prominent businessman and pro-democracy advocate, Rewane was a key supporter of opposition movements during the military era, especially in the 1990s. He was known for his deep involvement in the campaign to restore civilian rule, backing numerous activists and organisations that challenged military dictatorship.

Rewane’s recognition comes as part of a broader effort by the Tinubu administration to honour individuals who played significant roles in the nation’s democratic journey. Among others recognised were Professor Julius Ihonvbere, who received the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), and environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was posthumously awarded the same honour.

Members of the Ogoni Nine—Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine—were each awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). President Tinubu also granted them a full presidential pardon, acknowledging the injustice of their execution under the regime of General Sani Abacha.

By honouring Pa Alfred Rewane and others, President Tinubu reaffirmed the nation’s appreciation for those who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria’s democracy.
