President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigerian Armed Forces to intensify efforts to end the country’s persistent security challenges, declaring that national security remains the bedrock of Nigeria’s democratic stability, economic progress and regional peace.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu delivered the directive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, during the induction of two Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters acquired for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), as part of events to mark the 61st anniversary of the service.

He stressed that peace and security were core to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that enemies of Nigeria’s collective progress must be decisively neutralized.

“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace. The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained and well-equipped,” Tinubu said.

“For our people to engage in meaningful, productive ventures, national security must be strengthened. That is why we are committed to investing in cutting-edge defense technologies and giving our forces the tools to respond to both conventional and asymmetric threats.”

The President noted that the new helicopters were not just additions to the military’s fleet, but a statement of intent to consolidate Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace and security.

“This induction is a demonstration of our resolve to strengthen our Armed Forces, defend our nation, and reinforce Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa,” he said.

He also charged the military to maintain a robust maintenance culture and discipline in operating the platforms to ensure optimal performance.

“I expect discipline in operations and a strong maintenance culture that will enable the nation to derive maximum benefits from these acquisitions,” Tinubu added.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, said the newly inducted helicopters marked a critical step in the Nigerian Air Force’s modernization drive.

“These aircraft are capable of operating in rugged environments and will support both military and civil missions such as disaster relief and humanitarian operations,” he said
