DELTA: The Okpare community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State is in shock following the tragic death of a fisherman, Othuke Aaron, during a heated argument over ₦500 “kola money.”
The incident, which occurred on December 7, 2024, involved Aaron, a father of five, and his close friend and business partner, Ukoliko Samuel, a father of four. The duo, known for their strong friendship, had attended a social event where the conflict began.
According to Mr. Nduka, a relative of the deceased, trouble began after ₦2,500 was shared among five attendees. Samuel, who had briefly stepped away, returned to find that the money had been distributed in his absence.
“Samuel asked Aaron for his ₦500 share, but Aaron said he didn’t collect it and advised him to ask the person who shared the money,” Nduka recounted.
Samuel, however, insisted that Aaron should have taken the money on his behalf, leading to a heated argument that quickly escalated into a physical fight.
Witnesses reported that during the altercation, Aaron ran into his house, wore a ring, and returned to confront Samuel. He allegedly punched Samuel, causing him to collapse onto the tarred road.
“Samuel started bleeding from his nose, ears, and mouth. He was rushed to a hospital in Oleh, but the doctor confirmed him dead and notified the police,” Nduka explained.
Aaron, who accompanied Samuel to the hospital, was immediately arrested.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.
“We understand the community’s concerns and assure the public that justice will be served,” he said.
The incident has left the Okpare community in mourning, with residents expressing shock and disbelief.
“It’s unimaginable that a life could be lost over something as minor as ₦500. This is a lesson for everyone to learn how to resolve disputes peacefully,” said a resident.
Aaron, now in police custody, expressed deep regret. “I didn’t mean to kill him. It wasn’t supposed to end like this,” he said tearfully.
The tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of unresolved disputes and highlights the need for peaceful conflict resolution to maintain harmony in communities.
