In a deeply unsettling incident that has sparked outrage and sorrow across the country, a pregnant 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, Cynthia Chukwundah, allegedly set her boyfriend, 32-year-old Sunny Amadi, ablaze during a domestic quarrel in the Choba area of Rivers State.

The tragic event, which occurred late at night around 11 p.m., left both Cynthia and Sunny with severe burns. While neighbours rushed the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Cynthia, who also sustained burns in the inferno, was later apprehended by the police and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The incident has thrown the local community into mourning, with many expressing shock over what seemed like a minor disagreement spiraling into fatal violence. According to residents, Cynthia is reportedly carrying Sunny’s child, a detail that has added to the emotional weight of the tragedy.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the case is under thorough investigation. “The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about the fire incident at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba. Police detectives from Choba Division visited the scene and the hospital. Unfortunately, the victim later died while on admission,” she stated.

Iringe-Koko noted that the suspect was located and is currently undergoing treatment due to her critical condition. “She is heavily pregnant and unable to give a detailed account of the incident. However, once her condition stabilises, she will be interviewed as part of the investigation.”

The Police Command further assured the public that justice will prevail. “The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, urges residents to remain calm and peaceful. The Command will ensure that all facts are uncovered and justice is served,” the statement added.

This tragic episode has once again highlighted the rising wave of domestic violence and emotional breakdowns among young Nigerians, particularly students. Mental health professionals and social commentators are calling for greater emotional education, conflict resolution awareness, and early intervention in toxic relationships.

As Nigerians grapple with the realities of this heartbreaking incident, many are hoping that Cynthia’s recovery will lead to the full truth emerging  and that justice, healing, and lessons will follow.
