Abuja – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that troops under Operation Safe Haven rejected a ₦13.7 million bribe offered by terrorists during a counter-terrorism operation along the Jos–Sanga Road in Plateau State.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, disclosed this on Thursday during a media briefing on nationwide military operations in Abuja.
According to him, troops acting on a distress call intercepted two terrorists, who attempted to bribe them with ₦13.7 million to secure their release.
“On July 9, our gallant troops intercepted a vehicle riddled with bullet holes. The occupants tried to induce them with monetary gratification, which the troops declined,” Kangye said.
Two suspects were arrested, and items recovered included weapons, ammunition, a vehicle, and the cash bribe. Investigations are ongoing, and the items are in military custody.
In further operations across Plateau and Kaduna States, troops conducted offensive raids and responded to distress calls in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East LGAs, as well as Kaura and Sanga LGAs in Kaduna. These operations led to the neutralization of several extremists, the arrest of 12 suspects, and the rescue of three kidnapped victims.
Additional arrests were made in Wamba and Sanga LGAs of Nasarawa and Kaduna States, with the recovery of illicit drugs, arms, motorcycles, and vehicles.
Maj.-Gen. Kangye praised the troops for their resilience and professionalism, urging Nigerians to continue supporting military efforts and remain alert to suspicious activities.
