The University of Ibadan has raised concerns about the growing trend of female students turning to egg donation as a source of income.
In a memo dated April 15, 2025, and obtained by newsmen on Friday, the University Health Service warned students against treating egg donation as a sustainable or routine financial venture.
While recognising that egg donation provides hope for families struggling with infertility, the university cautioned that the process carries serious health risks and should not be approached casually.
The memo, signed by Dr. Aderonke Ajayi, Director of the University Health Service, noted a rising number of students engaging in egg donation through individuals, agents, or agencies.
Dr. Ajayi explained that the procedure involves administering hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries — a process linked to several short-term side effects, including abdominal pain, bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, and a potentially life-threatening condition known as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
She further warned that in severe cases, egg donation could result in infections, internal bleeding, ovarian torsion, injuries to organs such as the bladder and bowel, and psychological distress.
Concerns were also raised about potential long-term complications, including a possible decline in fertility. Research on the lasting effects of egg donation remains inconclusive, especially regarding how often the procedure can be safely repeated.
Dr. Ajayi advised that egg donation should not be performed more than three times per year and urged students to only patronise reputable clinics that adhere to established medical protocols and prioritise donor safety.
“It is important that our students fully understand the health implications and long-term consequences of egg donation,” the memo stated.
“We urge everyone to act with caution and prioritise their health over financial incentives.”
The university also appealed to the broader community to raise awareness and protect young women from misinformation and exploitation related to egg donation.
