The United Kingdom government has announced sweeping new restrictions on overseas recruitment, banning foreign workers from filling more than 100 occupations as part of its strategy to cut net migration.
The policy, disclosed by the Home Office on social media, aims to prioritize job opportunities for British workers and reshape the country’s visa system.
This move is the latest policy shift from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who took office in July 2024. The new restrictions affect key sectors including hospitality, logistics, healthcare support, public services, and the creative industries.
While a full list of the banned occupations has not yet been published, critics have warned that the policy could worsen existing labor shortages in critical fields like health and social care.
