A faction of the Labour Party (LP) led by Senator Nenadi Usman has demanded the immediate arrest of the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, over alleged criminal collusion with the party’s former National Chairman, Julius Abure.
The Usman-led group made the call in a statement on Thursday titled “INEC’s Acting Chair in Criminal Collusion with Julius Abure Over Fake Court Order – She Must Be Arrested,” issued in Abuja by the faction’s spokesperson, Ken Asogwa.
According to the statement, the faction accused Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu of conspiring with Mr. Abure to “orchestrate a brazen assault on democracy” by relying on what it described as a fake court order to recognise Abure as LP Chairman.
Asogwa faulted the Acting INEC Chair’s decision to invite Abure to Tuesday’s meeting with leaders of the 18 registered political parties despite what he called a subsisting Supreme Court judgement that recognised Senator Usman as the authentic leader of the Labour Party.
He said Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu had defended her action by claiming that INEC was merely obeying a court order, and that the Commission would comply if the Usman faction presented a valid judgement in their favour.
However, Asogwa said an independent investigation conducted by the faction revealed that no such order existed. He explained that while Abure had filed a suit against INEC in Suit No: CV/1914/2025 before Hon. Justice Kayode Agunloye of the FCT High Court, Gwagwalada, the court confirmed that no order was ever granted in his favour.
The faction therefore challenged Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu to produce the alleged court order she relied upon to recognise Abure, insisting that INEC’s action was based on false claims designed to mislead the public and subvert justice.
“The truth,” Asogwa stated, “is that INEC’s acting leadership has wilfully relied on a fabricated and non-existent order to justify an illegal and politically motivated act against the interest of the Labour Party.”
He added that even if such an order existed, it would still be null and void in the face of the Supreme Court’s unambiguous judgement of April 4, 2025, which conclusively upheld Senator Usman’s leadership of the party.
The statement called on Labour Party members nationwide to remain calm but to prepare for a peaceful demonstration to defend democracy and the rule of law within the party.
It further urged the incoming INEC Chairman to investigate the alleged misconduct and purge the Commission of officials accused of colluding with politicians to manipulate internal party leadership and court decisions.
