Abuja, Nigeria – April 22, 2025
Prominent activist and social reform advocate, Utomi Pat, has announced plans to lead a massive “Freedom Convoy” comprising 7.2 million Nigerians to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The march, expected to be one of the largest civic demonstrations in Nigeria’s history, is aimed at drawing national and international attention to what Pat describes as the “total state capture” of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
In a video post making rounds on micro blogging site, X,Utomi condemned what he views as the consolidation of power across the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial arms of government by a single individual. He further criticized the entrenched alliance between the Nigerian elite, rent-seekers, and corrupt politicians, accusing them of orchestrating the systematic exploitation of national resources at the expense of the people.
“The institutions meant to serve the Nigerian people have been hijacked,” Pat declared. “The Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary are no longer independent or accountable. They now serve a narrow interest that is bleeding the nation dry while millions of citizens suffer in silence and hunger.”
The “Freedom Convoy,” as Pat has dubbed it, is envisioned as a peaceful and symbolic assertion of citizens’ power. Organizers say the march will cut across ethnic, religious, and regional lines, uniting Nigerians from all walks of life who demand a transparent and accountable government.
While official date for the convoy is yet to be released, sources close to the planning committee indicate that logistical arrangements are already underway, and civil society groups nationwide have begun mobilizing support.
