Why Was Kanu Moved to Sokoto? — Lawyer Raises Alarm After Prison Visit

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Dr. Maxwell Opara, one of the lawyers representing convicted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has questioned the rationale behind his transfer to Sokoto, insisting the move is complicating the appeal process already racing against time.

“On what basis was he brought to Sokoto? I don’t understand the reason. His appeal is in Abuja,” Opara said after visiting Kanu on Sunday at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

He lamented that since the judgment was delivered on Thursday, “Friday, Saturday, and Sunday have passed with no progress. This is very unfortunate.”

Opara disclosed that Kanu is personally preparing his appeal but stressed that urgent steps must be taken to return him to Abuja so he can file it officially.

“As I speak to you, he is preparing his appeal personally. We are exploring ways to bring him back to Abuja so he can file it, because time is running,” he said.

Despite his detention far from the capital, Opara noted that Kanu remained in high spirits.

“We just met with him, and although he is in good spirits, the urgency of filing the appeal cannot be overstated,” he added.

Earlier, a PRIME GOSSIP ABOUT correspondent observed Opara and four other associates leaving the facility with several large documents after the visit.

Access to the prison area was noticeably restricted, with visitors kept at a distance pending security clearance.

However, residents of the surrounding community appeared largely unfazed by the heavy security presence, going about their daily activities as usual.

Shops were open, transportation was normal, and most locals showed little interest in Kanu’s presence.

Dr. Maxwell Opara had led the legal team to the facility on Sunday, reaffirming that despite the circumstances, Kanu remained in high spirits inside the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
