Wike Denies Backing Any 2027 Presidential Candidate

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Amid growing speculation about his political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly denied declaring support for any presidential candidate.

Speaking in Abuja during a media chat on Monday, Wike dismissed claims that he had pledged support to any contender. “I never said I will support the presidential candidate,” the former Rivers State governor said, addressing what he described as deliberate misrepresentation of his statements.

Wike, who remains a controversial figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to his role in the G5 group and his perceived closeness to President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisted that his loyalty lies with clarity and truth, not political propaganda.

Taking a swipe at political maneuverings in Delta State, Wike accused Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of secretly abandoning the PDP to align with the APC in what he described as a strategic move to secure a second term.

“People think they are smart. Your governor has left the PDP and you don’t know. He’s only pretending so he can return in 2027. That’s the game they are playing,” Wike said.

The comments come amid rising tensions within the PDP, where internal cracks have continued to widen following the 2023 elections. Wike’s statements are likely to stir fresh debates about loyalty and realignments ahead of the next electoral cycle.
