By Peter Onyekachukwu

Tension erupted in Mandinaring Village, Kombo North District of The Gambia’s West Coast Region on Saturday after the death of a youth during a police operation.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the incident occurred when a police patrol team confronted some youths allegedly smoking cannabis.

In an attempt to flee, one of them, identified as Omar Badjie, fell during the chase. He was rushed to Banjulinding Health Center, then referred to Kanifing General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His death triggered outrage as residents vandalised the local police post and attacked officers, leaving some injured.

Security reinforcements were quickly deployed to restore order in the community.

The Ministry described the development as “unfortunate” and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

It assured that a coroner’s inquest would be conducted to determine the cause and circumstances of Badjie’s death.

“The Government regrets this unfortunate loss of life and commiserates with the family of the deceased,” the statement read.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the rule of law and pledged to ensure safety and security for all citizens.

Residents were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and support peace in the community.
